From the mid-1950's on, the Sudbury Italia Flyers were the team to beat. In 1964, the Flyers won the Eastern Canada final and progressed to the national competition for the Dominion Cup. Once again, as in 1936, victory eluded them by a small margin.
In 1965, the Italia Flyers became a professional organization affiliated with the National Soccer League. This affiliation lasted for four years, during which the club became a powerhouse team, winning two N.S.L. titles. Financial constraints forced the club to drop out of the league in 1969 as franchise costs became too expensive to maintain.
