Archives Kit


Discover the interesting lives of some of our early settlers.  Use historical photographs and documents to help put the stories together.  Learn how to become a history detective using local primary sources!

Archives Kits are available for the following Grade Levels:

  • Grade 2 Archives Kit: Genealogy
    The purpose of this lesson is to allow Grade 2 students to research their family history and discover their family traditions and heritage.
  • Grade 3 Mini-Unit Archives Kit: Florence Howey's Diary
    This Grade 3 mini unit is based from the diary of Florence Howey, the wife of a Canadian Pacific Railroad doctor.
  • Grade 6 Archives Kit: The Thomas Edison Letter
    This language lesson incorporates primary sources into the classroom setting by using a letter that Thomas Edison wrote to his wife during his visit to Sudbury in 1901.
  • Grades 6, 7 & 8 Archives Kit: Death and Numbers
    The purpose of this activity is to incorporate primary source material within the classroom setting, in a non-traditional way through mathematics.
  • Grade 8 Archives Kit: Len Thomas Postcards - A Glimpse into the Life of an Early Sudburian Settler
    The Len Thomas postcard collection is a series of 14 postcards written by an immigrant who moved to the Sudbury area and wrote regularly to his father and sisters back in London. This Cornish miner moved to Sudbury in the early months of 1912, and experienced life in that time period.
  • Grades 11 & 12 Archives Kit: An Eye on Everything
    An Eye on Everything was an old column started in the 1920s, and was re-established in 1957 by journalist Robert Evans. Published in the Sudbury Star, this column gave readers a perspective on the events happening throughout the world as well as within their local community.
  • Senior Grades Archives Kit: Time Links - Analyzing Historical Photographs from the Sudbury Area
    The purpose of this activity is to interpret historical photographs taken in the Sudbury area in order to learn about the history of the city.
