Grade 3: Florence Howey

William and Florence Howey

Grade 3 Mini-Unit Archives Kit:
Florence Howey's Diary

This Grade 3 mini unit is based from the diary of Florence Howey, the wife of a Canadian Pacific Railroad doctor.   Because Mr. and Mrs. Howey are considered to be the first permanent settlers of the Sudbury area, they offer an insight to the city of Sudbury in its earliest days.  In her diary, Florence Howey discusses life as a pioneer of Sudbury and mentions items such as food, chores, people living within the town, the different buildings within the town, shopping, the Native Americans of the area, and several other interesting topics.

This mini unit comes complete with a presentation to introduce the topics discussed in the activities, black line masters of the activities, as well as teacher answer keys and  a rubric for each lesson.  This user friendly mini unit is an interactive showcase of pioneering in the Sudbury area.  Supplementary activity suggestions are also included.
