Grades 6, 7 & 8: Death and Numbers

Grades 6, 7 & 8 Archives Kit: Death and Numbers

The purpose of this activity is to incorporate primary source material within the classroom setting, in a non traditional way – through mathematics.

Students will be asked to record information that they will locate on the headstones in the local cemetery.  Information such as the decease's name, birth date and death date will be recorded in a chart as the primary stats for this assignment.  By allowing the students to take a class field trip to the cemetery, the lesson is highly interactive and shows students how to collect primary information from original sources.

This activity comes with 3 quadrant sheets to record information during the class field trip to the cemetery, a Death by Decade Frequency Chart and a rating scale for marking.
